Fathers on GLP-1s: Modeling Weight Loss for Sons Without Passing on Shame

Your son watches. What you say about your body, how you talk about food, whether you frame weight loss as discipline or as shame — he's absorbing it. GLP-1s can be a chance to break generational scripts, but only if you're intentional about the framing.

What Boys Absorb

Sons watch their fathers for cues about what a male body should be and how a man should relate to his own. If you spent your adolescence hearing your dad call himself fat, refuse dessert with disgust, or announce diets on Monday and abandon them by Wednesday, you know how much of that stuck. Your son is doing the same absorbing right now.

The temptation on GLP-1s is to narrate the process out loud in ways that feel motivational but land as shame. "Daddy's finally going to look normal." "I can't eat that, I'm being good this week." That vocabulary carries. Watch for it.

The Frame That Works

Reframe from moral to functional. Instead of "being good" or "cheating," use language around energy, strength, sleep, or how you feel after meals. "I feel better when I eat this way." "This medication helps my body regulate what it's hungry for." "I want to be strong enough to play catch with you until you're in college." That framing teaches your son that food choices are about how you want to feel and what you want to do, not about worth.

Being Visible About the Medication

Age-appropriate honesty about the medication itself matters. Boys who see their father inject a weekly medication learn that medicine is a normal part of taking care of a body — not something shameful or secret. When your son asks, tell him: "This is a medication that helps my body use food better. I'm on it because my doctor prescribed it. It's not a shortcut; it's a tool." Then let the conversation end. Kids don't need dissertations.

What to Never Say

A short list of phrases to strike from the household vocabulary: any commentary on your son's body ("you're getting a little belly"); any positive commentary on him losing weight or being thin ("look how skinny you're getting!"); any narration of his eating as good or bad; any framing of exercise as punishment for eating. All of these teach him to relate to his body through vigilance and shame. All of them contributed to the weight patterns that led some of us to GLP-1s in the first place.

The Long Game

The measure of whether you've done this well isn't your son's weight at 15. It's how he talks to himself about his body at 35. Modeling a functional, non-shameful relationship with food, exercise, and medical care in your own body — including the GLP-1 — is a father's job. Do it visibly, do it consistently, and don't apologize for taking care of yourself.
