The Powerlifter's GLP-1 Protocol: Preserving 1RM While Cutting
You've built the bench, the squat, and the deadlift over years. You want the fat off but not at the cost of dropping numbers you fought hard to earn. Here's a protocol for running a GLP-1 cut while preserving 1RM strength as much as possible.
The Core Trade-Off
Any caloric deficit reduces recovery capacity and, sustained long enough, reduces maximal strength. GLP-1s add appetite suppression that makes it easier to accidentally undereat protein and calories relative to what strength maintenance requires. The trick is running the cut deliberately, not defaulting into whatever the GLP-1 does to your appetite.
Protein Non-Negotiable
Set protein at 1g per pound of goal body weight, not current body weight. For most male powerlifters cutting, that lands at 200–250g protein daily. On GLP-1s, you may need to plan protein intake explicitly — bar, shake, meal, meal, meal — because default appetite won't drive you to it. Whey after training, casein or slow protein before bed, whole-food protein at each meal.

Training Modifications During the Cut
Reduce volume, maintain intensity. A common cut protocol: keep working sets at 80–90% of your usual, drop total sets by 20–30%, hold intensity (weight on the bar) as long as bar speed and form allow. Autoregulate — if bar speed drops noticeably or form deteriorates, take the weight down for that session rather than grinding.
Add one deload every 4–6 weeks. GLP-1 cuts generally warrant more frequent deloads than non-medicated cuts because recovery capacity is genuinely reduced.

Rate of Loss
For strength preservation, keep weekly weight loss under 1% of body weight. For a 240-pound powerlifter, that's about 2.4 pounds/week maximum. Slower is better if strength is the priority. GLP-1s can be titrated up or down to control loss rate — don't chase the maximum dose if you're losing faster than 1%/week.

Recovery Additions
Prioritize sleep (8+ hours if possible during a cut), creatine (5g daily, no cycling needed), and consider a light dose of caffeine pre-training if the GLP-1's fatigue effect hits you. Skip anything else exotic — supplement stacks are for people who've optimized the fundamentals, and GLP-1 cuts require re-optimizing them.

Realistic Outcome
A well-run 16–20 week GLP-1 cut for a strength athlete typically produces 15–25 pounds of weight loss with 5–15% strength retention on main lifts. Slightly slower cuts (24–30 weeks) can preserve strength better. Very aggressive cuts (>2% body weight per week) usually cost meaningful 1RM. Pick your priority and stick to it.
