Medicare's $50 GLP-1 Bridge Launches July 1 — Here's What Men Over 65 Need to Do Right Now
For the first time in over 20 years, Medicare will help pay for GLP-1 weight loss medications. Starting July 1, 2026, the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program will cover qualifying brand-name GLP-1s at $50 per month. If you're a man on Medicare who has been paying out of pocket — or who hasn't started because of cost — this is your window.
What's Covered
The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge covers the following FDA-approved weight loss medications:
- Wegovy (semaglutide) — injection and tablet formulations
- Zepbound (tirzepatide) — KwikPen formulation
- Foundayo (orforglipron) — the new daily pill approved April 2026
Who Qualifies
To enroll in the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge, you must meet ALL of the following:
- Enrolled in Medicare Part D — either standalone PDP or Medicare Advantage with drug coverage
- BMI of 35 or higher alone, OR BMI of 27 or higher plus at least one weight-related condition
- Qualifying conditions include: heart failure, hypertension, chronic kidney disease, pre-diabetes, history of cardiovascular events, obstructive sleep apnea
For men specifically, most of these comorbidities are extremely common. Hypertension alone affects roughly half of men over 65. If you have a BMI of 27+ and high blood pressure — a very common combination — you likely qualify.
How to Enroll: Step by Step
Step 1: Talk to your doctor now. Don't wait until July. Your provider needs to submit a prior authorization request to the program's central processor (not your Part D plan). Getting the paperwork done in June means you can fill your first prescription as soon as the program opens.
Step 2: Confirm your BMI and comorbidities. Your provider will need to document your BMI and verify qualifying conditions. If you haven't had recent bloodwork, schedule it now.
Step 3: Choose your medication. Discuss with your doctor whether Wegovy, Zepbound, or Foundayo is the best fit. For men who prefer no injections, Foundayo is the obvious choice. For men who want maximum weight loss, injectable Wegovy or Zepbound deliver higher efficacy.
Step 4: Fill the prescription. Once authorized, you'll fill at any participating pharmacy. The $50 copay covers a 30-day supply.

If You Don't Qualify (or Can't Wait)
Not everyone will meet the Medicare Bridge criteria. If you're under 65, don't have Medicare, or your BMI doesn't meet the threshold, compounded GLP-1 medications through telehealth remain the most cost-effective path:
